FAQ

Why Pelvic Connections?

Many patients are sent to traditional Physical Therapy or Occupational Therapy for their hip, back, and abdominal pain when they really need a pelvic floor specialist. Pelvic floor specialists exist as a special niche. We have additional training and skills to treat conditions such as bowel, bladder, or sexual dysfunction, back pain, hip pain, SIJ/pelvic pain, abdominal pain, hernias, scars, leg pain, and more.

Some patients are never informed about pelvic floor therapy from their doctors and are forced to take their own action by scouring the internet. It is not unusual for us to hear a sigh of relief followed by the question,

"why did no one tell me about this type of therapy?"

  • In the state of Connecticut, you do not need a referral to seek the help of a Physical or Occupational Therapist. In the uncommon case that there are any findings requiring a medical provider's attention, our providers will inform you at the time of your visit.

In the state of New York, you do not need a referral to seek the help of a Doctor of Physical Therapy, initially. After 10 sessions or 30 days, we will reach out to your doctor to request a documented referral to continue therapy services.

  • Yes. It is completely up to your comfort level and does not impact your treatment. If a heavy flow day happens to fall on your initial evaluation, there is SO much information to gather externally if you are more comfortable starting with that instead. We have pads and wipes available in the office.

  • Yes. You are welcome to bring a guest with you to your appointment and they are welcome to remain in the room with you throughout our time together, or to wait for you in our waiting room. We want you to feel comfortable.

  • Your first visit with us will consist of a thorough chat with the pelvic floor specialist to discuss your case. A thorough explanation will help us help you, and there is no such thing here as "TMI".

Then, you will be asked to change into a gown and an assessment will be performed. Although each case is unique, we usually suggest both external and internal assessments.

The external portion will consist of a full head to toe assessment to examine posture, range of motion, movement patterns, breathing and abdominal coordination, balance, strength, stability, and a series of special tests to narrow down what is driving or causing your symptoms.

If you feel comfortable, we believe it is best to have an internal (transvaginal and/or transrectal) assessment to determine even more specific causes to your symptoms. This exam provides clues for your pelvic floor therapist if your pelvic floor is weak, tight, uncoordinated, or doing just fine. Whatever the case may be, we have a unique set of tools in our toolbox to treat each case. We will be here working with you every step of the way, and you can withdraw your consent at any time. We are here for you.

You will leave the appointment with a clear understanding of your body and what we can help you with. You will be assigned an individualized home program and a plan of care will be established between you and your pelvic floor specialist. We believe in a "phases" model.

Phase 1: Weekly (1-2x per week) sessions until your symptoms are minimized

Phase 2: Every other week or less to put your symptom recovery to the test! Here is where we add back in more challenging activities or higher energy demand goals. We help you keep your symptoms minimized while adding life back in!

Phase 3: This looks different for everyone as far as frequency goes. Here, you are "graduated" to come back at least every 6 months-1 year for a check up. We may test higher level goals out such as marathons, mountain hikes, or more! Otherwise, many of our clients come in monthly at this phase because of their successful results from body work, vagus nerve massage, personal training, homework progression, and more!

  • We proudly offer unique solutions. We offer a virtual services, 2 hour sessions for clients facing travel issues, and "compact" plans of care (3x+/wk) for those coming in from out of town. Please call us or fill out the inquiry form below.

  • You can begin pelvic floor therapy at any stage of pregnancy.

Some people start early on (first trimester) to support a healthy foundation, others come in during the second or third trimester to prepare for birth, and many reach out when discomforts or symptoms arise.

We tailor each session to your unique stage of pregnancy and your goals—whether that’s easing pain, improving mobility, preparing your body for birth, or setting the stage for smoother postpartum recovery. It’s never too early or too late to benefit from pelvic therapy during pregnancy.
